ANDERS ZORN

NUDE

Anders Zorn is also noted for his nude paintings. Interest in sculptural form, because initially he wanted to become a sculptor, can be explained by Zorn's frequent appeal to the motif of a nude female body.  The warmth of which he can convey both in the smoky-gray twilight of the workshop, where, next to the strict lines and cold tones of plaster casts, human flesh seems especially lively and beautiful, and against the background of the greenish-blue distances of the sunny landscape.

Sensual admiration for a young beautiful body is inseparable from the artist's enjoyment of the picturesque texture of the work.  Eroticism here is, as it were, "removed" by performing artistry, acquiring a purely aesthetic sound.

Paintings have the freedom and energy of sketching, using warm and cold light and shadows with contrasting areas of warm and cold tones, as well as an understanding of color contrasts and reflected light.  Skillful use of the brush by Zorn allows the shape and texture of a painted object to reflect and transmit light.

His fondness of painting full-figured women gave rise to the terms Zorn kulla or dalkulla, an unmarried woman or girl from Dalarna, as the women were called in the local dialect of the region Zorn lived.
