ANDERS ZORN

PORTRAIT

Zorn achieved international success as one of the most famous portrait painters of his time.  Among his clients were three American presidents, the nobility, the Swedish king and queen, and numerous representatives of high society.  Zorn also painted portraits of family members, friends, and self-portraits.

The people in Zorn's portraits are confident, full of self-esteem.  Here, the artist's talent was fully manifested. He  attracted contemporaries, the ability to grasp the similarities and at the same time give the image of the depicted special significance, and the portrait as a whole - representativeness and showiness.

Zorn was particularly fond of working in public.  During one of the demonstration sessions, the artists present recalled: "Zorn painted the portrait with a huge brush, with only three colors: black, yellow and white."
Zorn's sweeping writing left on the viscous painting surface powerful and long, like furrows, strokes.  He appeared to his contemporaries as a sorcerer who possessed the rare ability to create a complex portrait in 1-2 sessions without preliminary sketches.

Another hallmark of Anders's painting was the answer to Savva Mamontov about his portrait.
When Mamontov asked why he didn’t make a single button on his jacket, Anders proudly said: "I am not a tailor. I am  an artist."  The spectacular phrase of the famous "master" impressed everyone very much and became quite famous among artists.
